Galeb

Information about the ship

The MV Galeb (Motor Vessel Galeb) is a historic ship that is being transformed into a museum by the City Museum of Rijeka.

Here’s a summary of its history and the project:

Origins: Launched in 1938 as Ramb III, it was initially a banana transport ship.

World War II: During the war, it had various roles, serving as an auxiliary cruiser for the Italian Navy and then as a minelayer for the German army under the name Kiebitz. It was sunk in 1944 during the bombing of Rijeka.

Post-War: Salvaged and overhauled in 1947, it became a training ship for the Yugoslav Navy.

Presidential Ship: From 1953, it became the floating residence of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, hosting numerous world leaders and playing a crucial role in the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War.

Museum Project: The City Museum of Rijeka is restoring the ship to convert it into a museum. The goal is to dedicate 80% of the ship for museum purposes, while the remaining 20% will house a restaurant/café and a hostel, making it a unique cultural and tourist attraction. The museum is also seeking public contributions (memories, photos, and items) related to the ship for future exhibitions.
